Evidence, Analysis, and Meaning
The cases above all involved breaking news and illustrate the challenges of establishing even the most basic realm of evidence: What are the facts and what do they actually establish about what might have happened?
The evidentiary issues are largely a matter of corroboration and confirmation from knowledgeable sources. And this is challenging enough.
But given that so much media moves beyond simply establishing facts and enters the realm of analysis and interpretation, we need to go further. What kind of evidence do we require in those instances when the news is not unfolding in real time and when an outlet offering us news purports to weave together those facts to provide a deeper sense of meaning? How do we identify whether the evidence really supports the conclusions contained in the story and whether the news that aspires to analyze and interpret events is providing evidence or just inference. Those are the questions we must take up next.
